Plains Game:
We suggest that our clients use a rifle that they are familiar with in the .30” calibre range.
The use of good quality/premium soft nose expanding bullets is strongly advised. The use of mono metal or conventional solids is recommended for the use on the mini antelope. I have found that this gives minimal cape damage whatsoever.
Big Five:
By law, the minimum calibre that you are able to use on Elephant, Rhino & Buffalo as well as Hippo is the .375’ H&H Mag. A good quality soft nose is recommended for your initial shot on Buffalo, there after solids area to be used for all follow-up shots.
Good quality conventional solids or mono metal solids are to be used on Elephant, Rhino and Hippo. Bigger is not always better, A slightly lighter big bore that you are comfortable shooting is better than a cannon that you are afraid of and results in you flinching! For Leopard and Lion, you can use a .30” cal rifle with premium soft nose rounds.
Bushpig Hunting over Hounds:
I suggest that either a rifle in the .30” cal range or bigger (here is an excuse to put some lead through your medium to heavy bores!) with open sights.
A shotgun loaded with SG, LG or Solids is also very good for this form of hunting. A bit of practice on rolling tyres with a hard board target wired into the centre, will go a long way to making your shots at pigs a lot easier. Please make sure the back drop is safe when doing this practice.
The Overseas Client and South Africa’s Firearms act:
Each visiting hunter is allowed to bring four (4) firearms on safari. Each firearm must be of a different calibre. A maximum of two hundred (200) rounds per firearm is permitted. No ammunition is permitted to be transported with any firearm. It must be packed separately in the Checked Luggage.
Import / Export of Firearms:
Due to South Africa’s very stringent Firearms Control Act there are a lot of requirements to be met, by visiting hunters. For example you will need to complete an SAP 520 form (in BLACK INK) on your arrival. This can and often is a very frustrating and time consuming experience!
I strongly suggest that you make use of the pre issued permit applications and specialised services offered by the very reputable company AIR 2000 HUNTERS SUPPORT.
These pre issued permits cost about US$160-00 per person, they are well worth the money.
AIR 2000 HUNTERS SUPPORT can be contacted via email on air2000@global.co.za their website address is www.hunterssupport.com/permits.htm (here you will find the application forms for pre issued permits).
You will be issued with a LETTER OF INVATATION by THE BOX H, inviting you to come on Safari. This is required in order to apply for an Import/Export Permit. |
